see green, sea blue

The cover and first page of the main comic I’m putting together for my November book art/art book gallery show! I’m shooting for about 20 pages full color…. yeeks!

I’m also putting together an alphabet book, if I have the time.

My older work, “But I Love You (Sometimes)” will also be shown. I’m finally putting a cover together for it after about a year; I’m printing a set of 25 full color to sell at PIX next weekend! YEEEEEK. I’m also printing up a small amount of business card/post card thingies. Also yeek. o____o I’ve never exhibited/sold my work before, so that’s a little freaky, but I’m also pretty excited. I’m also going to make a little stand-up to make the table seem a little nicer. (maybe of Sometimes riding Wendingo, if anyone remembers the comic I need to finish posting? ) I’m sharing with a few friends, so hopefully between us we’ll all get our work out there and sell some comics!

GET EXCITED.

B&W Photo 1; the first month.

I’ve been thouroughly enjoing Black & White photo; there’s something extremely satisfying about the click of the shutter, and the moment you get to take a peek at your newly developed film, and the grainy impurities of TX400. After a long day in front of the computer, it’s GREAT to just dive in and get your hands dirty, especially if that means being on your feet for a little bit.

Computer-related art is fun and all, but it’s ‘traditional’, tactile means of production that I love.

time warp: week 3 of Junior Year, year 20 of Caitlin Rose

The first two weeks of school have come and gone, and I’m beginning to find a rhythm to the days. I have a schedule I can work around, and more importantly eat and sleep around, which is huge since those things tend to fall by the wayside once classes start back up. I’m taking three big art courses; one in game design, one in electronic instillation, and one in black and white film photography (so far my favorite.) I’m thinking of taking a photo minor. I’m cooking full meals every other day. I’ve toned down the DS-addiction.

And oh yes; I turned 20 yesterday.

It’s still too soon for 20 to feel any different from 19, but it does have a sense of weight and gravity, doesn’t it? 19 is teenager, in definition; 20 is two decades old. 20 is the nebulous area in between teenager and adult; not old enough to drink, but stuck in that horrible realm of “responsibility.”

Yeesh.

IN OTHER NEWS MORE PERTINENT TO AN ART BLOG;

1. My first game design project will be a Rear Window-esque text(and sound)-based adventure where the narrator is listening to the sounds in the apartment above him/her, and forms conclusions based on the player’s developing paranoia.

2. Electronic instillation doesn’t seem to have a real artsy project yet, but I will get back to you.

3. B&W photo has so far yielded some deliciously gothic photograms involving my great grandmother’s old jewlery, a couple of fox skulls and a tulle skirt. iamsoclichebutwhocaresitwasfun. They should be online shortly. <3

4. I AM IN A COMIC SHOW WITH 3 OTHER PEOPLE. THERE WILL BE AT LEAST 3 COMICS BY OCTOBER. ONE OF THEM IS CALLED “CRAB DIP”. SO EXCITED.

Gimme gimme gimme color

For a few weeks now I’ve been trying to incorporate color into my sketchbook. I’m only using a few colors; everything but microns seem to bleed through the pages, so I’ve been adding color line work to my inked sketch pages. My favorite inking pens are now hands-down Faber-Castell PITT artist pens; I’ve been using the sepia pens, and they have real indian ink and I love them to pieces. The lines go down smoother, and it’s overall much more enjoyable than microns or even copic multiliners, which I’ve used in the past. The price range is somewhere in the middle of the microns and the copics, but in any case I don’t mind splurging on these beautiful, beautiful pens. For color, I’m still using mircons; the color copic pens are still far too pricey. If I do a big important project, maybe I will spend a bit, but for now microns are suiting me fine.

The last one is my favorite. Queenie is being developed for a small graphic novel project. I’m still working out her character, but I think FIGHT STUFF FIGHT EVERYTHING is pretty close to what I’m going for; at least I’ve got the ultra-confrontational bit down pat.

In other news, I’ve been in Pittsburgh for a week. It’s finally getting a bit more manageable in terms of heat, thanks to a string of thunderstorms that I keep avoiding by a hair’s breadth. I haven’t gotten as much work done as I’d like, thanks to a lot of facilities closing for last minute renovation. Thanks to this, I’ve abandoned the video editing portion of my job for the time being and dove headfirst into the archival part of the gig; lots of VHS, a few beta and U-MATIC, lots of misleading labels, and LOTS AND LOTS of dust. It’s not even normal dust, like you get when you don’t touch a bookshelf for too long. No, this dust is a sticky and cloying substance that gets into your lungs and sticks to your hands and makes everything feel grimy, even after you’ve washed your hands 4 or 5 times, and have taken a shower, and keep rubbing your hands together hoping the sticky crap will stick to itself and fall away instead of continuing to stick to you. This dust has been in that cabinet for years, and it has evolved, and it is terrifying.

I meet it in battle again on Monday. This time, I will be prepared; I’m bringing gloves, bitches.
